Gudakhu' is a paste-like tobacco preparation used widely in Orissa and neighbouring states of India. During use it is rubbed over the teeth and gum with a finger tip. Besides tobacco, it contains molasses, lime, red soil and water.
The 16th Century saw the emergence of Tobacco in India. At the time it was popularly smoked as the Hucca. Another variant emerged quickly. This was Gurakhu.

Gurakhu is a tradition in rural India where in some states it is presented as one of the most important gifts offered to a newly wed bride.
In certain other parts farmers chew Gurakhu and sing during harvest to keep their minds off the hard work and maintain good cheer and freshness.
Miners use Gurakhu much to the same effect.
Down the ages Gurakhu has been effectively used in rural India for its pleasant aroma and in retaining freshness all day long.
